Bump Envy
25 July 2008 - 9:58 a.m.

Week Twenty-Five

The structures of the spine begin to form -- joints, ligaments and rings. These will protect the all important spinal cord which serves as the information transmitter for your child's body.

Blood vessels of the lungs develop.

Your baby's nostrils begin to open. There is a study out of Belfast that suggests babies at this stage have the capability of scent preferences!

The nerves around the mouth and lip area are showing more sensitivity now. When baby is rooting for food later on, these will be valuable!

His swallowing reflexes are developing.

Dexterity is improving. Your baby can make a fist and would clasp objects placed in palm.

Your child has now obtained an approximate length of 13.6 inches (34.6cm) and weighs 1.46 pound (660gm).

This week I am suffering from a bit of "bump envy" though I don't really know why.

An old schoolfriend who I am in touch with on facebook is due her baby 3 weeks before me and she has the most huge baby bump I've ever seen. She still has just under 3 months left and looks fit to burst. But it seems that it's only her belly that has been where she's gained weight. Pah!

At a recent doctors appointment her tummy was measuring two weeks ahead of what she is so she could be on course for a fairly big baby or she could have a lot of water in there but it still makes me annoyed that I feel just like a wider blob of the blob I was before.

At 25.5 weeks my bump is only just that little bit further out than my bust and I still look like I've eaten way too much. Yet some days I look quite big just not big enough to look that pregnant but still remain incredibly fat looking.

I will ask buddy Sharon to get a pic of me when I see her next so you can see what I mean.

I want a nice roundish bump.

I think baby has definitely moved upward or is laying in a much more comfortable position for me. Baby no longer feels like it will just fall out if I sneeze suddenly and I do think that this baby is calmer than Matthew was. I do get lots of little rolls and kicks but nothing like when I was pregnant with Matthew. He was really going for it.

Matthew loves to have an input in baby ideas of late and is always suggesting new names. As you can imagine, many are crossed straight off the list as only a 4 year old boy would want "Power Ranger" or "Harry Potter" "Calvin Harris" or "Ben 10" as a name for a brother.

Still, he seems better for girls names. Yesterday he suggested Amy for a girl. I quite liked it until he said "then I can have a sister just like Amy Winehouse" that killed that idea very fast.

Anyway, it's hot and sunny and I want to be in the garden with a book for the next couple of hours before the rain sets in for the weekend.
