Birth Planning
02 June 2008 - 11:19 a.m.

I was going to write about a couple of things but beings Nicky has already written about her travel system today I'll leave mine until later in the week. ;)

The other thing I have been thinking about a heck of a lot is birth. Well, starting to think about a bit of a birth plan.

The more I think about it the more I am "attracted" to the idea of a home birth. I really would like it that way as it's convenient in many ways but I also have a couple of doubts and overall I think I would be better in hospital.

This is down to the fact that although I was incredibly lucky and had a short, pain-relief-free labour with Matthew, I did have to have an IV drip (intrevenous - spelling?) near the end of the labour. This only because my contractions were not quite strong or long enough to give birth without an intervention and after 2 hours of pushing they thought it would be better for me and my baby if things were hurried up a little.

This is the main thing putting me off a home birth.

There is something incredibly reassuring knowing that if anything is needed at all, it is all at hand in hospital.

If I have a home birth, I am also put off by the idea of the mess. It's not a pretty thing birth. Yes, it's a miracle and a very very special thing to individuals but I am not much up on the "hot water and towels" idea. Yes, it's an old cliche and I know a midwife would be present when needed. Yet when all is said and done, if there would be any problem at all, I would be taken to hospital anyway.

So for now, it's a nice idea but not one I am fully convinced about.
